x86
if intel would make x86 an open standard or open source
then that could brake the advance of arm
in the server and supercomputing market
by making different companies use x86 instead of arm
intel risks loosing market share to other companies
if other companies use their own x86 chips
but intel could still make money from that
by producing those chips from other companies in intel fabs
many open standards and even open source
are used in most industries
in the car industry wheel and tire specifications
are basically open standards or even open source
different tools that workers use such as hammers and screw drivers
are basically open standards or open source
and many chemical recipes such as cement are open source
and so on
and if usa would worry
that chinese companies could use x86 to make china stronger
then it's wise to understand
that it's not whether chinese companies has access to x86 or arm
that enables china to become stronger in chip production
instead it's the availability of chip production technology
and since the latest commercial chip production technologies
are owned by american, european and asian companies
and not by chinese companies
which could easily be regulated by trade deals
and counter espionage
historically cpus have been designed to have more and more cores
which indicates that cpu cores won't become more complex
instead cpu cores will rather become less complex
in order to fit more cores in a chip
and by looking at the vast amount of open source chip core designs available on open source sites
indicates that it's relatively easy to design chip cores
and would thereby be relatively easy for chinese companies
to design their own chip cores
the difficulty for chinese companies would instead be acquiring
the latest commercial chip production technologies
