learning by doing

my opinion 

is that students should do more assignments 

and less tests 

preferably no tests at all

when students do assignments 

then learning by doing is applied 

and it doesn't matter what type of assignments it is 

if it's programming assignments 

or math assignments 

or writing assignments 

or doing multiple choice questions 

if students do assignments instead of tests 

in the education system 

then that will prepare students for work life 

since learning by doing 

is how workers learn to work at companies 

and humans have been formed by evolution 

to adapt to situations 

which is learning by doing 

a learning by doing loop: 

try something 

fail 

adapt

try again 

succeed 

in the education system 

tests are used by teachers 

to determine if students have learnt anything or not 

but if students do assignments instead of tests 

then both the teachers and students will see 

if the students have learnt anything 

and it will be easy for both teachers and the education system 

to monitor the progress of the students 

by logging how many assignments each student has completed 

if the log shows that some students do fewer assignments 

or that some students fail in their assignments 

then those students need more help from teachers 

that the teachers and education system 

monitors the progress of students 

increases positive stress for the students 

like a video game monitors the progress of a gamer 

and makes that progress visible to other gamers online 

it's not a problem that teachers have more power than students 

and it's not a problem 

that teachers decide which students have succeeded or failed 

instead the problem is that tests are inefficeint tools 

that are used by teachers and the education system 

students feel negative stress from doing tests 

which kills motivation to study 

and students feel positive me stress from doing assignments 

which increases motivation to study 

it doesn't matter how much the education system improve 

if the core problem remain 

which is 

tests kill motivation to study 

if a student succeeds in an assignment 

then that student should get a new assignment 

and when the student has done all the assignments in the course 

then the student is graded on that course as good, very good or excellent 

but if a student fails an assignment 

then that student shouldn't be graded for that assignment 

and that student shouldn't be failed in that course 

instead that student should be able to retry assignments 

as many times as possible 

and preferably each retry of an assignment 

shouldn't be the same assignment 

and instead be variations
