spreading knowledge could probably be a powerful weapon 

spreading knowledge about technology 

to alien civilizations 

could increase survivability and living standards of righteous aliens 

which unrighteous aliens would try to prevent 

and that would lure out unrighteous aliens 

spreading dark arts 

to alien civilizations 

could enable righteous aliens 

to lure out unrighteous aliens 

if knowledge isn't spread to alien civilizations 

then those alien civilizations 

would probably continue to fumble in the dark 

and fewer righteous aliens would survive 

and more unrighteous aliens would survive 

and that would mean more problems for humanity to solve
