righteous individuals need to survive as long as possible 

for strategic reasons 

if more righteous individuals survive as long as possible 

then that will make it easier and faster 

to lure out unrighteous individuals 

if a rigtheous individual stops trying to survive and dies 

then the burden which that righteous individual was carrying 

will have to be carried by another righteous individual
