in the old days
is because they did heavy work for a short while
and then light work for a long while
and then heavy work for a short while again
for example
a farmer used a shovel to dig up soil
and put that soil in a wheelbarrow
which is hard work
and then the farmer walked far with the wheelbarrow
and dumped the soil somewhere else
which is light work
so the farmer's muscles and body
did hard work for a short while
which made him stronger
and then light work for a long while
which rested his muscles and body
but I did not have those historical facts
in my mind
when I developed my own strength training programme
many years ago
my strength programme was
do as many pull ups as possible
rest a few minutes
and then do as many dips as possible
then rest for 30 minutes
and then do as many pull ups as possible
rest a few minutes
and then do as many dips as possible
then rest for 30 minutes
and repeat all day for many hours
until the body is not able to do any more pull ups and dips
and do that strength programme
every second day
no matter if it's week days or weekends
which enabled me to become stronger
until I could do 30 pull ups and 30 dips
with bad technique
because I don't care about my technique
for body lifting exercises
I only care about my technique
if it's something that can break the body
like squats and deadlifts
