kingdom two crown series
in the campaign of most rts games
each map is a new mission
and each mission can be saved
so if player fails mission
then player can load a previous save on that mission
or restart a mission or select a previous mission
which offers the player freedom
but in the game series kingdom two crowns
each map is a mission
but those maps are also connected
so that the player can travel between each map
and visit previous bases and use them
which offers the player freedom
but if the player fails a mission in the kingdom two crowns series
then the game partially restarts ifself
so that some progress is lost on each map
which punishes the player
basically the game partly restarfs itself
from one player mistake that led to failure
and there is no ability to save in the game
so the player can't load an earlier part of the game
to try a different strategy
which in my opinion is punishing the player too severely
some ideas for change:
most maps in the kingdom two crowns series
always have access to the sea
so if the player character is about to loose
or the map is about to le lost
then the player character could jump into a small boat
that travels to a ship
which transports the player character to a previous secure map
or the player character could be picked up by a flying creature
that transports the player character to a previous secure map
a previous secure map would be a map that can't be overrun by monsters
unlese the player deactivates security on that map
which opens up that map to massive enemy attacks
but atleast one map would always be a secure map
so that the player has somewhere to fall back to
