how technology changed strategic reality throughout history

the roman empire traded mostly with territories in it's own empire 

it would have been difficult for the roman empire to trade with neutral countries and almost impossible to trade with enemy countries

but because technogy changed strategic reality 

that is what today enables a powerful country to trade with other countries without needing to invade them or even having troops there
