it's surprising that not more automated warehouses are being built, 

pallets could be stored on more levels, 

much higher than conventional storage 

there are even automated container storage systems commercially available, 

storing containers much higher, 

which uses less land which is vital in harbours and warehouses where access to enough land area is not available
