but I have some thoughts on the matter
it's usually not apparent
that most people in a society like to help each other
sometimes less, sometimes more
sometimes less often, sometimes more often
depending on the situations
but society works because people help each other
and people help each other more than many realize
the bus driver drives the bus for his salary
to help himself get money
but as he drives the bus
then he also helps other people to go somewhere
so each individual in a society probably has more empathy
than what they themselves or others realize
so if a salesman sees selling a product to a customer
as helping that customer to buy what it needs
then that salesman could tap into his own empathy
and use his instincts to help that customer get what it needs
if a salesman doesn't believe that a customer needs a certain product
then that salesman will fight his own instincts
when he tries to sell that product to the customer
and that could possibly make the salesman worse at selling
simply
it feels good to sell coca cola to a thirsty customer
that needs to drink
but it feels bad to sell water to a hungry customer
that needs to eat a hamburger
if another worker needs a tool
then a worker feels good
if he helps that other worker find a tool in the factory
but if that worker would be instructed by the boss
to sell a tool to a visiting customer
then that worker could feel uncomfortable
if he doubts if that visiting customer needs a tool
but if that visiting customer shows the worker
that it needs a tool
then it will feel good for the worker
to sell that tool to the visiting customer
if a guy is a shy introvert
then he might seem like he wouldn't succeed as a salesman
but if he could tap into his empathy
to help others get what they need
then his own instincts could align with his intention
to sell a product to a customer
so when a salesman tries to figure out what a customer needs
then that salesman is helping the customer
but the salesman is also helping himself
to find his own motivation to sell
