high end gpu market
the company intel designs a lot of cpus
and produces their cpus themselves in their own factories
intel has tried to get into the gpu market too
by designing and producing low end gpus
for the gaming market
which has been met with tough competition
from competitors like amd and nvidia
but there is a significant demand for high end gpus
in the supercomputing market and the ai market
so why doesn't intel make high end gpus
for the supercomputing market and the ai market
gaming gpus are usually sold for a few 100 dollars each
but sometimes up to a 1000 dollars each
but gpus for supercomputers and the ai market
are sold for 10'000 dollars or 30'000 dollars each
so intel could make a lot of money
in supercomputing market and the ai market
smaller players could design their own high end gpus
but they would still need to get those produced by someone else
like tsmc
while intel's advantage is that intel could produce their own high end gpus for the supercomputing market and the ai market
and if the demand for high end gpus increases significantly
in the supercomputing market and the ai market
then tsmc would possibly have difficulties satiating that demand
but intel could meet that demand
if intel produced their own high end gpus
elon musk's xai is according to media planning to build a supercomputer
that would use 300'000 high end gpus that cost 30'000 dollars each
and microsoft together with openai have similar plans
according to media
there are a lot of companies that design ai coprocessors
which probably are produced by tsmc
and intel has (had?) some ai coprocessor products
but the supercomputing market and the ai market
seem to prefer gpus instead of ai coprocessors instead
it seems that high end gpus are sometimes called ai coprocessors
intel has most of their factories in usa
while tsmc has almost all of their factories in taiwan
and taiwan is a potential hotspot because of it's proximity to china
in a possible war between usa and china
which could be of significance
if gpus would be used by military supercomputers
controlling drones and automated defences
